Our plans to convert The Corn Exchange were approved by Brecon Beacon National Park Authority’s planning committee on October 4th 2016. It was the first time the authority had used new powers to grant planning and listed building consent at the same time – and they did so unanimously.
The plan was to convert the building into shops and flats. Ownership of the building would be retained by the shareholders so that the building could never again fall into the hands of a supermarket – which would damage our town.
New windows were opened up to make the shops more attractive and a passageway was formed through the building to give access to the flats above.
Putting the entrance doors to the flats at the back means all living rooms and bathrooms will face the High Street.
The rental income from the shops and flats will be used to maintain the building and then to provide a modest return for The Corn Exchange’s investors who now number more than 320. The vast majority of our shareholders are local and have small stakes in the project. One shareholder has invested three times.
